We are starting a new month, and a new quarter. We have learned a lot in the last month and have so much more to look forward to in the month to come. In Math, we are continuing to practice writing and making numbers in the teens. I am amazed with how well we are able to add and subtract! We are learning the partners of numbers so quickly! Through the rest of the school year we will continue working with teen numbers, and finding the partners of numbers with our Tiny Tumblers. Using 'The Night Sky" we worked together to find all the partners of 10. Thank you for continuing to support your child at home and help with their math homework. Reading: In reading, we have started Daily 5. Students get a chance to choose read to self, read to someone, writing, word work, and next week we will add listen to reading. This is independent work time while I meet with students and small groups to practice skills and our reading strategies. We are continuing to learn reading strategies to help us become better readers. So far we have learned Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish, Stretchy Snake, and Flippy Dolphin. You can continue to practice these strategies when reading with your child at home. Excellent job! During Lent, we are continuing to learn about Jesus and how we can become more like him. I hope you all have a wonderful Easter! Please continue to watch the weather and send the appropriate clothing for your child to play outside for recess. Let’s pray for more warm and beautiful days so the leaves can start budding and the flowers can start blooming. In Science we learned about dental health and how it's important to take care of our teeth. One way is to make sure we don't have a lot of sugary foods, because every time the sugar causes plaque to grow in our mouths. We saw this through the experiment above. In the top container there is just water and yeast, the bottom has water, yeast, and sugar. You can see how the yeast has reacted to the sugar, just like plaque does in our mouths! I still have some extra toothbrushes if anyone would like some extras for at home. Please let me know. Upcoming Events April 6 – Report cards sent home April 13- Kindergarten at Mass April 14 – Good Friday- No School April 17 – No School-Teacher In-Service Welcome to a new month in our school year. We have had a few teaser days with some warmer temps. Just a reminder to keep sending all the winter gear with your child, hats, boots, etc. February was a monumental month with our 100th day of school. Now we are looking forward to all the great events yet to come. In Reading, we have finished up all of our Alphafriends! Now we will be starting Daily 5. Every day we will have 2-3 rounds where students will get to choose from the five choices: Read to self, read to someone, writing, word work and listen to reading. We will be building our stamina so ask your child what stamina goal they met that day. Along with Daily 5, we are going to start learning some reading strategies, so watch for those in the weeks to come. Report cards are coming up again very soon, so I will be doing skills testing for those in the next few weeks. Your child may have a week or two where they do not get a new guided reading book, as that is my only time for one-on-one testing. Please be patient with me as I finish up the skill tests. In math, we are continuing to learn our teen numbers, practice our fluency in addition and subtraction, and greater and less than. We will be finishing up Unit 4 this week and will be taking our test on it next week. Unit 5 will be focusing on more partners of 10, the numbers 1-20, and more story problems and equations. In religion we are celebrating the time of Lent. Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. We will be learning the Easter story, and will be able to retell it to you! We have had so much fun learning about many different events in the month of February, and have so many more to look forward to in the month of March. For Presidents day, we learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. February was also, dental health month and we learned about the importance of taking care of our teeth. Everyone received a tooth brush and I still have a box full! If you would like some for siblings or friends, please let me know :) The month of March is going to bring us so many exciting topics to learn about. We are looking forward to Dr. Seuss week, and will be reading many, many books by him. If you have any Dr. Seuss books at home, feel free to send them to school with your child with their name on them. We will be trying to figure out the lessons Dr. Seuss is trying to teach us through his wild and wacky stories. We are also looking forward to St. Patrick's Day and even Spring Break! God Bless everyone over Spring Break and safe travels for those who are going someplace (hopefully warm!). Upcoming Events March 7- Kindergarten attends Mass March 10- No School- Teacher In-service March 17- St. Patrick’s Day March 20-24- Spring Break March 27- Bring in Bullfrog reading logs March 30- Kindergarten attends Mass We are halfway through the school year and there were lots of exciting things that happened in the last month, and more that are still to come. This week we have been celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Monday started off with Special Person day. We enjoyed Mass together and then were able to make our awesome picture frames. Thank you to everyone who was able to come spend some time with a student, they all enjoyed it so much! Tuesday we were lucky enough to attend the Mass at Holy Trinity with Bishop Ricken. It was an amazing experience! On Wednesday we were able to wear our pajamas to school and even got an extra long afternoon recess! We have more exciting things to come on Thursday (formal lunch with ice cream social!) and Friday (Spirit day with the game show "How well do you know SMS" and bowling!) This month also has some really exciting things coming up. In math we are learning how to find partners of 10, working on teen numbers and showing them as a group of ten and extra ones, and continuing to add and subtract. I am amazed at how well we are adding and subtracting! In Writing we have been doing such a great job writing stories about our lives. As authors and illustrators we can now draw our picture, label it, and write one or two sentences. Since we are almost done with our Alphafriends in reading, we know pretty much all the sound and we are using that knowledge to spell with our best kindergarten spelling! In Social Studies we are learning about Government- Working Together. We read the book A Day with Police Officers and learned about not only rules and laws police officers enforce, but rules we have to follow at home and school, As you all know, for second semester I decided we were going to change to Dojo as our behavior program, and so far I really enjoy it. I love how parents are able to easily stay in the loop, the students can get immediate feedback, and they can cash in their points for neat prizes. We collect points throughout the week and on Friday they can decide to cash in their points or save them to earn a bigger prize. I keep track of their remaining points on their Dojo monster, and we start all over for the next week. I included a picture of the points/prize sheet. I think it's working well! We have a few things to look forward to in the next month. We have the Cake Walk and raffle (keep buying tickets!) on Thursday, February 9. Also on that day, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school with some fun activities all centered around 100...stay tuned. Finally, on Valentine's Day we will be exchanging Valentine's as a class. Have a great time working on your Valentine’s boxes as a family. Remember to keep reading and tracking your minutes on your Jeremiah reading log! Jeremiah will be here on Monday, February 6 to help us get excited to READ, READ, READ! I hope everyone has a great February and enjoy the fact that our days are finally getting longer!! Stay warm! Upcoming Events- February 7 – Kindergarten at Mass February 9 - Cake Walk, Raffle and 100th day!! February 14 – Valentine’s exchange February 23 – Kindergarten at Mass *April 11th- Mark your calendars!!! We will be attending "The Cat in the Hat" at the Weidner Center. We are still working on a second activity for the day...more details will be coming soon!!! December was such an exciting month! We can't forget about our AMAZING Christmas Concert, where everyone did such a fantastic job! We got to decorate our gingerbread houses with our reading buddies, what creations we had! Also, we earned our Polar Express pajama party! What a perfect way to end the month of December and kick off Christmas break! Now we are back into the swing of things after having our Christmas break. Hopefully, your break was relaxing and you were able to spend a lot of time with friends and family.
In math we are continuing our chapter on teen numbers. We will be able to recognize them, write them, and find their partners. We have been doing a lot of finding 5-groups and 10-groups in other numbers. Also, lots and lots of practice with addition and subtraction. We are getting so fast!! In science, we are starting our mini-unit on germs. Since winter is a time to get sick, we want to stop the spread of germs as much as we can. We have been practicing how to cover our cough and sneeze and washing our hands for as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday.” Please remember to keep your child home if they are feeling sick. It is better to keep them home until they feel better, than to spread the germs to everyone else. In reading we are almost finished with our Alphafriends. We only have 5 more to go before we will be able to read and write all the sounds of the alphabet. When we finish them we will start the Daily 5. I am very impressed with how well we are reading our guided reading books. Thank you for all your hard work that you do with your child every night. In religion we finished up learning about the birth of Jesus and the journey Mary and Joseph had to take. We are now learning about the time of Epiphany and are looking forward to Catholic Schools Week, which starts January 29. I will soon be testing on the prayer we’ve been practicing, The Our Father. Can you believe we are almost finished with the second quarter? My, how time flies when you are having fun! Keep warm and God Bless!!! Upcoming Events January 6– Kindergarten at Mass January 12- book order due January 20–end of 2nd quarter- 1/2 day of school January 24- Kindergarten at Mass January 29 – Mass for Catholic Schools Week January 29- February 3 – Catholic Schools Week Even though we’ve had a few unseasonably warm days, we have also had cold days. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the changing weather outside. Once there is snow on the ground students need snow pants and boots. Also, yesterday we started our winter gym. Please check with you child to make sure they have a pair of shoes that still fit...we know how fast those little feet grow :) They will be changing into these shoes when we get to the gym. November was an exciting month. In reading and handwriting, we have learned a lot of new Alphafriends and can read and write a lot of new words with them. Also, with the help of our Star Words we can read and write sentences. We’ve even started reading books! In Math, we are starting to learn about teen numbers and finding groups of 10 with help from the “10 bug”. In fact, we have started practicing how to add and subtract to 5! We have so much to be thankful for and if you look at the pictures below you can see your kids think so too. I am thankful for each of them and for each of you as you do a wonderful job raising your children with the spirit of Jesus in everything they do! Thank you! December brings a lot of exciting events to look forward to. It is the month of Advent, a time to look forward to the birth of Jesus! Also, we have our Christmas program to look forward to. We have been practicing hard and are doing a great job remembering the words to our songs. To celebrate Christmas we will be doing a fun activity (gingerbread houses) with our 5th grade reading buddies a few days before Christmas break (exact day TBA). We are looking for a few donations: 2 boxes of graham crackers, 2 cans of frosting, decorating candy (can be old Halloween candy), and paper plates (study or Styrofoam). Please let me know if you will be able to donate one of the items by note or email. Thank you in advance! Have a happy December, a Merry Christmas, and stay warm if you can. Upcoming Events December 8- Holy day of Obligation- Kindergarten at Mass ***changed December 14 – Christmas Program (High school auditorium 6:30) December 19- Kindergarten at Mass December 23-January 2 – Christmas Break Well, we are through another month of school. Some days the weather is starting to get chillier. Please send jackets, hats, mittens, etc. with your child each day to make sure they are dressed for the changing weather. A lot of exciting things have happened in kindergarten during October. First, we had an exciting field trip to The Farm and Hillside Apple Orchard. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who helped the run smoothly while I was home with a sick little girl. We also had some awesome visitors from the Luxemburg Fire Department who came to talk to us about fire safety (see previous post). Also, we had Open House where we got to have some great food, see our rooms, and maybe even win some prizes. It was great seeing all the parents and grandparents and everyone else the children wanted to show their room to. Finally, we had our Halloween Social. Everyone had such awesome costumes! We went to our reading buddies' room and got to do some fun learning activites with them including an experiment where we got to make some monster slime! We also were able to go downstairs and watch a movie with popcorn. We are looking forward to a lot of fun things happening in November. We will be finishing up our math chapter on 5 groups in the numbers 6-10 and will be starting our chapter on teen numbers next. We will continue to practice the numbers 1-10 and our dot-to-dots to practice number order. Our first quarter will end next week and report cards will go home the following Thursday (17). It's hard to believe we are almost through our first quarter already! With the colder temperatures, winter gym will be starting soon. Please make sure that your child has an extra pair of gym shoes at school to wear at the gym, if they do not already. With that being said, we also have a couple of outdoor winter gym days left. We have gym right away in the morning when it is still chilly. Please make sure your children have hats, mittens, and warm jackets for those chilly mornings. We have gym every Wednesday. I don't know about you, but I sure am looking forward to Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy all the time spent with family and friends. We really have a lot to be thankful for! Upcoming Events November 3-4- Parent/Teacher conferences November 8- Quarter 1 ends November 10- Kindergarten at Mass November 17- Report cards go home November 22- Thanksgiving food drive-Kindergarten at Church November 23-25- Thanksgiving vacation - No School This week has been an exciting week learning about fire safety. We were able to end the week with some amazing visitors from the Luxemburg Fire Department. They talked to us about fire safety and said we aced their test because we were so smart! They brought the fire truck for us to see, and we even were able to crawl through the fire truck to see the inside! Then everyone got a chance to spray from the big hose! It was such a fun way to end our week of fire safety.
Just a reminder: tomorrow (Friday) the fire station will be coming to school to talk to the students in 4K-1st grade about fire safety. We will probably be standing outside for most of the time. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather! Pictures to come later :)
We did such a great job getting our work done, we got to go outside and enjoy some of the last days with summer weather!
